The south coast of England used to be dotted with small fishing villages that had been there since the Anglo Saxons came to the islands. In the 19th century the English discovered sea-bathing. An explosion of houses, piers, sea walks, amusement arcades, holiday camps, town halls and afternoon tea cafes.Late in the 20th century the English discovered Spanish vacations - and elsewhere. The dust of the explosion settled and went quiet. Very quiet. What remains is softly decaying red bricks and wood soaked in sea-spray. Not much else. For those who have to be there - this song is for you.

I must have some affection for this place because it's one of my favorite songs.

Pass me that bottle of home made wine
It's cheap and it's cheerful and it looks just fine
Oh my God it's still raining
Close the curtains
And sit by my side

Think of a number and dry your eyes
Tell me a story but tell no lies
We're lost on the edge of old England
Isn't it funny
Perhaps we aren't here

Yesterday's houses and yesterday's men
Call up the doctor he can say just when
Follow me down to the seaside
Don't be concerned love
I'm just south coast blue
